2. Alternative Freighting (back to top)
You are welcome to use alternative freighting options, courier services or local postal companies from your city or country.
Consider that small garments may be cheaper to send to and from New Zealand via your local postal services rather than by Mainfreight, due to the handling and customs fees payable.
If you are not taking advantage of the Mainfreight Sponsored Freighting option, please note that you will need to pay for the return freighting of your garment.
WOW will return your garment using the cheapest method available, at your cost, and will contact you in advance to arrange this.
If you are using an alternative freighting method, please ensure you complete the required freighting and clearance documentation and pay any applicable fees.
Note that all entries must be at World of WearableArt HQ in Nelson by Monday 12 June 2023, 5pm (NZST) at the latest.
3. Hand Deliveries (back to top)

Additional International Freighting Considerations
Please read the below carefully when planning your freighting options, especially with regards to customs and New Zealand’s biosecurity clearances. All customs and clearance costs must be covered by the designer.
CUSTOMS CLEARANCES:
- On your customs declaration form, state a nominal value for your garment (e.g. Less than AUD $100 or US $150). Please note that this is not a reflection of the true value of your garment, it is merely for customs purposes – you may insure your garment to any value.
- Garments not sent with a nominal value will incur additional customs charges, payable by you (the designer) before your entry is released into New Zealand. This will delay arrival in Nelson.
- Customs charges incurred on arrival in New Zealand will be in addition to those paid at origin.
- If you are asked by your freight provider to provide the Terms of Shipment (sometimes called INCO Terms), use ‘Deliver Duty Paid’ (DDP)
- Please state on your documentation AND mark the box containing your entry:
“Temporary Exhibit Only. Not for retail sale.”
We have created these templates to assist with documentation: SLI for Mainfreight Sponsored Freighting, Commercial Invoice
BIO-CLEARANCES:
New Zealand has strict requirements around biosecurity and biological materials entering the country. These have been put in place to help protect New Zealand’s native plants and animals from introduced pests and diseases. If you have used biological materials you will need to check carefully that your garment will be able to clear biosecurity requirements.
- Ensure that the contents including any biological materials are fully declared on your customs declaration.
- Before entering a garment that uses animal or plant products, establish whether the products are protected by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) https://cites.org/eng/disc/what.php.
- If necessary, ensure that your entry is accompanied by the necessary export documentation from the CITES authority in the country of origin.
For more information on New Zealand Biosecurity:
Visit the Ministry for Primary Industries’ website for more information on importing your entry into New Zealand https://www.mpi.govt.nz/importing/
If you have a specific query you can also email info@mpi.govt.nz or phone +64 9 909 3030.
Packing Your Garment
It’s important to pack your garment carefully and securely so that it arrives in Nelson looking the same as when it left your studio.
We’ve put together some top tips on how best to package your entry here.
Additionally, please carefully consider the following:
- Please insure your entry from the time of its dispatch through to its return.
- Ensure your garment is packaged carefully and is easily transportable. Do not send in heavy packaging such as wooden boxes or old wardrobes! Heavy packaging should only be used if absolutely necessary. Please avoid using wood if you are sending from overseas as this carries bio-security risks which could result in your box being refused entry by Customs.
- You (the designer) are responsible for packaging your garments securely.
- Make sure you remove any batteries from your garment before packing. See the section on batteries for more information.
- Garments packed firmly in smaller boxes are much safer than those loosely packed in over-sized boxes.
- If your strength is creating and not crating, you may like to ask a friend to help you pack your garment.
- If using Mainfreight Sponsored Freighting, packed garments should not exceed more than 1 cubic metre in volume.
- ALL entry documentation including Dressing Instructions, signed Terms & Conditions (available to print from Step 3: Complete & Submit Entry as part of the online entry process), and student identification (if applicable) MUST be included in your box. As part of your online entry process you will find a final checklist at Step 3: Complete & Submit Entry.
- Please print the official address label generated as part of the World of WearableArt Competition online entry process and attach to your box ready to freight your entry.
- Boxes must have a return address clearly marked.
Batteries and Electrical Garments
Batteries and power banks are classed as dangerous goods and generally are not accepted for freighting. You will need to discuss with your freighting provider before packing batteries with your garment.
If your garment has electrical components, please make sure that you provide detailed instructions. Our guidelines on electrical components can be found here.
If your garment requires a specialised form of power supply, please e-mail Tanya Jacobs to discuss further.
Please note that we will not be able to return any batteries or power banks sent with garments.
Calculating Cubic Metres
Designers using Mainfreight Sponsored Freighting are allowed to freight an entry(s) in more than one box, however these should not exceed a total of 1.0 cubic metres (m3).
If your box(es) are over 1.0m3 in total, additional fees may be incurred.
To calculate cubic metres, measure your garment (once firmly packaged) in metres and multiply length x width x depth.
For example:
0.8m length x 0.6m width x 0.35m = 0.168m3
If you have more than one box, calculate the cubic metres for all boxes and add them together.
The total should not exceed 1.0m3
