Each year there are six section themes for designers to be inspired by when entering the competition. This includes three recurring sections; Aotearoa, Avant-garde and Open, and an additional three sections which are unique to each annual competition.
While living in Japan, Dawn became fascinated by Shinto legends like tsukumogami—the belief that spirits inhabit everyday objects after a century of use, their nature shaped by how they were treated. Inspired by this myth and the history of Japanese ceramics, Dawn and Ben explored Shonzui porcelain, known for its cobalt blue patterns and symbolic power. These garments reflect the Shinto idea that kami reside in all things, with golden kintsugi cracks revealing past damage and reverent restoration. Once shattered, the vases now stand proudly together, their scars transformed into precious marks of resilience and care.
Each year there are six section themes or ‘worlds’ for designers to be inspired by when entering the WOW Competition. This includes three recurring sections; Aotearoa, Avant-garde and Open, plus three unique themes which are announced each year.
