We have had the idea for a couple of years and spent the last couple of months planning it. It needed to be held when there were the least amount of flights.

Recently, World of WearableArt and Supporting Sponsor, Wellington International Airport, teamed up to create something a little bit extraordinary. Two months of working through approval processes, flight schedules and logistics planning went into successfully pulling off the photoshoot of imagination taking flight…
Starting at 4:00am on Sunday 16 June, the day began with the preparation of the World of WearableArt models’ hair and makeup before they were dressed in the four award-winning garments that featured in this spectacular shoot:

Eye See You Fluffy Kowhai, Tina Hutchison-Thomas, New Zealand (2018 New Zealand Design Award Winner)

Regular airport activity and flight schedules were not interrupted for the photoshoot so our time out on the runway had to be planned to the minute in order to work around incoming and outgoing flights. In between flights an airport transfer bus was used to move the team off the runway to a safe waiting zone, then once the “all clear” was given the team moved back out into position to capture the images on the runway. Watch the behind the scenes video below and discover what went into staging the shoot of imagination taking flight!
