White is Right for The Dominion Post People’s Choice Award

The public has voted and decided on its favourite garment in the 2007 Montana WOW® Awards. ‘Aurora Australis’, a tribute to our Southern Lights and designed by Aucklander Sharon Reid won The Dominion Post People’s Choice Award. ‘Aurora Australis’ also took out the top honours in the CentrePort Shades of White Section. A record 5,674 people voted for the People’s Choice Award.

Sharon describes ‘Aurora Australis’ as the “mesmerizing play of light that appears in the frigid air of the Antarctic winter; visual poetry penned from the quantum leaps of atmospheric gases”. Her garment which appeared onstage in the midst of amazing lighting effects, created the effect of an aurora australis by reflecting the light display. The garment was made from 550 metres of plastic corded strapping and acrylic drops and beads.

Runner Up to The Dominion Post People’s Choice Award was ‘Rattle Your Dags’ by Paula Coulthard and Ursula Dixon, winners of the 2007 Montana Supreme WOW® Award. ‘Rattle Your Dags’ is a rallying cry for the fashion victim – encouraging the audience to avoid being a sheep blindly following the flock. Commended was ‘Prehistoric Princess’ by David Walker of Alaska. Created entirely out of cherry wood veneer, this garment also won the Weta Award, chosen by Richard Taylor of Weta Workshop.

One lucky voter has also won a luxury Nelson prize provided courtesy of
