Entries Selected for 2004 Montana World of WearableArt™ Awards
More than 180 creations have been selected to be part of the 2004 Montana World of WearableArt™ Awards in Nelson in September, the largest number in recent years.
A panel of the three guest judges, Oscar winning set designer from Lord of the Rings Dan Hennah, Dunedin Fashion designer, Margarita Robertson and previous Supreme Montana WOW® Award winner, Simon Hames of Wellington, joined Nelson artist Sally Burton, and WOW® creator, Suzie Moncrieff, to spend the weekend viewing modelled entries from all over the world.
The Judges say their task was extremely difficult. Simon Hames says the creations are world class, while Dan Hennah says they represent the top end of creativity and equal anything he has seen anywhere in the world. Margarita Robertson says the garments could easily grace the catwalks of Europe. Suzie Moncrieff says the quality of the entries continues to exceed previous years, with designers submitting especially strong creations in the Illumination Illusion (themed Black and White) and Reflective Surfaces sections.
This year features a raft of entries from new designers from as far afield as Asia, USA, the UK and Australia.
There are seven main sections in the 2004 Montana WOW® Awards. They are Bowater Toyota Children’s, Scenic Circles Bizarre Bra®, Tourism New Zealand Avant Garde, Air New Zealand South Pacific, Port Nelson Illumination Illusion®, American Express Open, and the Nelson City Council Reflective Surfaces section.
Each section has NZ$5500 in prize money over three placings, while the Supreme Award winner receives NZ$10,000, as well a NZ$10,000 American Express international travel prize and a trophy created by internationally renowned Hoglund Art Glass, valued at approximately NZ$2000. There are also a number of special award categories.
In addition to the seven main sections the Creative New Zealand Artistic Excellence Section, is open exclusively for previous Supreme WOW® Award winners and judges. The section forms part of the existing Historic Section, showcasing previous Supreme Award winners.
The Montana WOW® Awards showcase over seven nights in Nelson’s Trafalgar Centre, September 10, 11, 12 & 16, 17, 18 and 19.
