2006 Judge's Forum - notes, questions and comments

1. Q: Could we see close up detail of the garments whilst the show is running?

Virginia King: felt this was more of a museum experience and a reason that you must visit the World of WearableArt & Collectable Cars Museum in Nelson.
Doris de Pont: WOW could look at producing an image catalogue (separate from the programme) which had an image of each of the garments on stage.

2. Q. On stage the overall garment is showcased so much in terms of the choreography. How much can we use the people in the artwork and dictate the choreography to make the garment come to life?

A: Heather Palmer: Please give as much instructions as possible and if you want to check you can make personal contact with her whilst you are making the garment. Remember that the choreographer needs to choreograph the section taking into account all the garments, the props and the section script.

3. Q. Sometimes it is frustrating when the choreography of the garment isn’t what was expected.

A: Heather Palmer: Please provide us with as much information as possible and we will try our best to take these requests into consideration.

4. Q. Last year I was a first time entrant and I wasn’t accepted into the show and it made me feel much better when I came to the Judges forum because I was encouraged by the Judges to keep on trying.

A: Doris / Virginia / Gaylene Preston: commented on how important (as with any creative project) it was to accept the knock backs as an encouragement and to get back on your feet and try again.

5. Q. Why did some designers win more than one award – couldn’t the Awards be more spread out?

A: Suzie Moncrieff: The supreme winner has to win a Section as part of the supreme award winning conditions. Furthermore some garments were just so special that the Judges couldn’t ignore them for a section placement and a special award e.g. Wellington International Award, HP Planet Award (for use of recycled materials), TEC Tertiary Student Award and Turners & Growers First Time Entrant Award.

6. Q. It would be nice for all designers to have a picture of their garment on stage.

A: All designers will again receive a certificate with an image of their garment – this will be posted out by early November.

7. Q. What if the garment has no philosophy behind it – is that okay?

A: Virginia King: Your garment doesn’t have be explained or interpreted however having this background on what drives a designer is even more powerful in terms of an overall concept.

8. Q. Will each designer get a personal critique of their garment?

A: Suzie – unfortunately there isn’t the time for this however Suzie happy to do a brief personal conversation if appropriate.

OTHER COMMENTS

9. First time entrant and was honoured that she could stand with her peers. Felt that the Montana World of WearableArt™ Awards show treated all entrants on an even keel and there was a real community feel. Also felt that (particularly as an International entrant) that they would like the section briefs earlier. Also suggested that we could run text to the sides of the stage outlining the garment materials / inspiration as the opera do in the Sydney Opera House.

10. Encouraged the designers to use the designer forum on www.worldofwearableart.com – great way to build the community spirit in the lead up to designing and creating your entry.

11. Indian Tutor attending the Awards with students from Design Schools around India. So impressed with the concept and wants the word to spread so that all designers have the opportunity to participate.
