Welcome to the first Designers newsletter for 2006!!! The cooler nights and shorter days are an ideal opportunity for designers to gather their inspiration and skills to create a fabulous entry for 2006!
Important Entry Information!
An unfortunate typo error in the 2006 entry form indicates the $45 entry fee must accompany both Part A and Part B of the entry – making a total of $90. This is not the case – the one off fee only needs to accompany Part A. WOW® apologises for the error and any confusion this may have caused and please note that you will be given a full refund of $45 if you have paid the entry fee twice.
‘Mainfreight Limited’ - the 2006 designers’ freighting sponsor
Mainfreight Limited has made the incredible gesture of supporting New Zealand designers entering the 2006 Awards by providing them with the opportunity to freight their garments to World of WearableArt in Nelson FREE from the cities of Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch.
In addition Mainfreight have also offered a 20% discount off the standard freighting cost for entrants who live outside the cities of Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch. These entrants can send their garment from the closest Mainfreight depot (there are 28 around New Zealand) – check out www.mainfreight.co.nz for information on your closest depot.
The following are the conditions related to this offer:
Garments need to be delivered to one of the following three depots:
The garments are to be delivered between 01 June 2006 & 15 June 2006. Please note that garments delivered after 16 June 2006 will not be eligible for the FREE transportation offer. They will however be able to take advantage of Mainfreight Limited’s offer of 20% discount off standard Mainfreight transport costs.
Should you be organising Mainfreight Limited to freight your garment from your region (e.g. Hamilton) to one of the three main collection points please ensure that your garment is received at the collection point prior to 14 June 2006.
Size of Garments: The standard entry construction requirements apply. Garments that exceed the entry forms height, width and length restrictions will not be accepted.
Packaging of Garments: It is the designer’s responsibility to securely package their garment as if it is being couriered separately. All garments are moved on an Owners Risk basis. All packaging needs to show the ‘top stow’ and be made of materials (e.g. wood) which are strong enough so that other garments can be packaged around it – soft cardboard will not be acceptable.
Insurance: Insurance is the full responsibility of the designer. All garments are moved on an Owners Risk basis.
NOTE: World of WearableArt™ has negotiated this designer benefit on your behalf. We therefore ask you to respect the above conditions to ensure the continued support of Mainfreight Limited.
Entry fees – refund
As part of the continuing campaign to make entering the Montana WOW® Awards even more attractive, designers whose garments are selected for inclusion in the show are entitled to a full refund of their $45 entry fee when they purchase show tickets. This drops the price of a ticket considerably, and helps designers experience the excitement of seeing their garment ‘in full flight’ on stage for the first time.
International Designers fees
WOW® is very aware of the high cost of freight to get garments to Nelson for Judging, and while being able to assist New Zealand designers with the generous Mainfreight offer, are aware our international designers face even larger freighting fees. To this end the $45 entry fee is waived for overseas entries to offset what can be a considerable cost.
Website upgrade – Designer’s Forum
WOW® is very excited about an upgrade to our website, which now includes a wonderful new opportunity – a designer’s forum. Follow the designer links to the forum, register and take advantage of this wonderful resource to keep in touch with each other and WOW®, ask questions, source materials, or just to discuss anything WOW! This forum is to give designers a voice on line, and we hope you will take advantage of it as an added communication tool. The designer’s link also contains information on entering, an entry form which can be downloaded, previous designer’s newsletters, and extensive information on 2006 sections and prizes. The Designers link is a specific section of the WOW® site aimed at being a comprehensive tool for designers. The addition of the forum is to provide an ideal platform for telling us what else you would like to see available on line, and to encourage communication between designers. 2006: New Sections
As outlined in the last newsletter – there are changes to some of the section themes for 2006 – aimed at stretching the imagination even further!!
Children’s Section: Inspired by Children Using the originality, freedom and honesty of the unique works of art that children produce. Create a work of WearableArt™ using ideas & imagery from children’s paintings & craftwork. Artists and designers are invited to make works of art to adorn children. Shape It Section: Stripes, Spots and Checks – Fashion gurus tell us not to combine – but this is WearableArt – we create our own rules!!! Using one or a combination of these shapes, create a work of WearableArt which challenges and provokes. Boldly break all the rules – let’s continue to create new ones.
Illumination Illusion Section: Performance Piece – One of the great strengths of WearableArt™ is the ability to bring garments to life on stage. This would not be possible without designers constantly creating works of WearableArt™ which are designed specifically to move, creating a whole new appearance or interpretation. Use the additional magic of UV light to enhance this concept even further. Create an entry that is born to perform. Gather your inspiration from dance, theatre, masks, puppetry and illusion using the magic of UV light to WOW® the audience. While in recent years this section has been restricted to only black and white, 2006 sees a return to every colour of the spectrum. Work with the rainbow to create a piece to perform not under the spotlight, but the illusion of UV light.
New stage layout – better views
For the first time in many years, the layout of the stage for the 2006 show will be quite different, offering better views of the garments. The traditional wall to wall snake stage is being replaced with a new triangle shape, which will allow a more ‘upfront’ view. While many garments feature delicate, intricate or subtle work this detail can easily be missed. The 2006 shows will feature big screens featuring a live ‘close up’ feed of many of the garments, which will give the audience a whole new view and appreciation of the design.
Designers Post show Function
Following feedback from the 2005 Post show Designer’s Function, WOW® has made some fantastic changes to the format to ensure this social occasion fulfils everyone’s needs, while still being a great celebration! The function will be divided into two zones – one being an area for catching up with other designers, relaxing and having a post show chat. The other area will include a band and party atmosphere for those who would rather trade conversation for dancing! The venue will be advised in a later newsletter. This function represents a great opportunity to mix and mingle with your peers and carry on the festivities after the show.
That’s it for March – we look forward to seeing some great dialogue on the Designers Forum, and a continual flow of entries for 2006.
