MAINFFREIGHT COMPLIMENTARY FREIGHTING The team at World of WearableArt™ is delighted Mainfreight Ltd will for the second year, support designers by providing complimentary freighting of garments from the cities of Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch to the World of WearableArt Offices in Nelson.
In addition Mainfreight have also offered a 20% discount off the standard freighting cost for entrants who live outside the cities of Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch. These entrants can send their garment from the closest Mainfreight depot (there are 28 around New Zealand) – click here for information on your closest depot.
The following are the dates and conditions related to this special offer:
DATES & CONTACT DETAILS: Garments need to be delivered to one of the following three depots:
The garments are to be delivered between 01 June 2004 & 15 June 2004. Please note garments delivered after 15 June 2004 will not be eligible for the FREE transportation offer. They will however be able to take advantage of Mainfreight Limited’s offer of 20% discount off standard Mainfreight transport costs.
Should you be organising Mainfreight Limited to freight your garment from your region (e.g. Hamilton) to one of the three main collection points please ensure your garment is received at the collection point prior to 15 June 2004 and Mainfreight have been advised it is to be consolidated with the other WOW entries.
SIZE OF GARMENTS: The strict standard entry construction requirements apply. Garments that exceed the entry forms height, width and length restrictions will not be accepted.
PACKAGING OF GARMENTS: It is the designer’s responsibility to securely package their garment as if it is being couriered separately. All garments are moved on an OWNERS RISK basis. All packaging needs to show the ‘top stow’ and be made of materials (e.g. wood) which are strong enough so other garments can be packaged around it – soft cardboard will not be acceptable.
INSURANCE: Insurance is the full responsibility of the designer. All garments are moved on an Owners Risk basis.
NOTE: WOW® has negotiated this designer benefit on behalf of all designers. We therefore ask you to respect the above conditions to ensure the continued support of Mainfreight Limited.
ASSISTANCE FOR INTERNATIONAL DESIGNERS Based on feedback from our international designers, we have decided to waive the entry fee for international entrants in the 2004 Awards. Thanks to the generous Mainfreight offer, we have been able to assist New Zealand designers with freight costs, so it is great to be able to offer an incentive to our international designers. We have received entries from as far away as Russia and Denmark so the word is spreading!!
WOW® STAMPS THEIR MARK ON THE WORLD! As mentioned in our last newsletter, WOW® was delighted to announce it will feature on a special stamp issue released by New Zealand Post this month.
At that stage we could not divulge the actual images which will appear on the stamps – but now we can. Congratulations go to designers Susan Holmes, Rowan McLennan, Louise Neilson, Stuart Johnson and Jan Kerr.
Featured on the 45-cent stamp is ‘Dragon Fish’ by Susan Holmes of Auckland, which she created from hand-dyed, stencilled and ruched silk organza split cane and recycled baskets.
Wellington’s Stuart Johnson won the 2002 Montana Supreme Award with ‘Persephone’s Descent’, created from hand-made components of mild and stainless steel, brass, chain, wood, leather, pewter and rotary clothesline parts, which features on the 90-cent stamp.
The $1.35 stamp features ‘Meridian’, a beautiful silk garment which symbolises the return of energy, vitality and strength to its designer Rowan McLennan of Napier after a long illness.
Prehistoric Maori fishhooks were the inspiration for Nelson designer Louise Neilson’s entry ‘Taunga Ika’, depicted on the $1.50 stamp, which she made of harakeke (flax), supplejack, pumice and muka.
The design on the $2.00 stamp, ‘Cailleach Na Mara’ (Sea Witch) by Jan Kerr of Waikanae, was created from recycled fabric, old lace and beads, and adorned with papier mache sea creatures, driftwood, old bones and shells – all caught in a sea net woven into her garment.
Congratulations to those designers that were chosen! The stamps will be available for one year from May 5 and New Zealand Post is expecting a big response from collectors. The WOW® stamp issue will be available as First Day covers, in a special presentation pack, or simply across the counter, individually, on request.
They can be bought at New Zealand Post retail outlets - PostShops and Books & more stores, Regional Stamps Centres, the Wanganui Stamps Centre or click here to view their website.
2004 JUDGES Judges for the 2004 Montana WOW® Awards have been announced. As usual our resident Judge, Nelson artist Sally Burton will be adding her expertise. Sally will be joined by Dan Hennah, Simon Hames and Margarita Robertson. Dan is taking time out from working on Peter Jackson’s production of King Kong to Judge this year’s awards. Twice nominated for an Oscar for his Set Decoration for the first two films in The Lord of the Rings trilogy, Dan brought the Golden Statue back to his Nelson home this year for his work on the final LOTR film “The Return of the King”.
Simon Hames also worked on Lord of the Rings as a prop maker, but is best known to WOW audiences as the creator of the 1999 Supreme Award winner – Superminx – the mischievous and fun pair of Opossum “chairs”.
Margarita Robertson is the designer behind Dunedin based fashion label Nom D. Since its inception in 1986, Nom D has been among a small number of fashion labels which have been responsible for defining the style that is now referred to as ‘The New Zealand Look’.
