Montana World of WearableArt™ Awards Show Winners 2004
Labour of Love Wins Young Nelson Designer Ultimate Prize
An 18 year old Golden Bay designer who spent 2 years dreaming up her garment and a thousand hours creating it, has taken out the Supreme Award at the Montana World of WearableArt™ Awards in Nelson tonight.
Claire Prebble’s entry “Eos”, a stunning creation of woven sterling silver, copper wire, beads and silk, was inspired by a Greek Goddess.
Claire says Eos is an abbreviation for Evolution of the Spirit, and has been evolving for two years. “Eos is the all seeing Goddess of the Dawn. The black skirt represents to me the night trailing behind her. I found the theme very fitting, especially when I was working all night until dawn.”
Claire first entered the Montana WOW® Awards as an eight-year-old, becoming a finalist in the Childrens section with “The Junk Fish”. Her 2001 entry, “Perelandra” was highly commended in the Open section and the Creative Excellence section of the Awards.
Eos also won this years Nelson City Council Reflective Surfaces section. As the supreme Montana WOW® Awards winner, Claire receives $10,000, a $10,000 international travel prize from American Express, and a Hoglund Art Glass Trophy valued at $2000.
The Awards were a fabulous feast of entertainment, attended by a capacity crowd of 2,500 – including the Prime Minister, Helen Clark, and a host of diplomats and ambassadors.
The show featured a lavish array of 180 garments, woven between a feast of entertainment, from a flame eating magician, a gaggle of French Nuns, a 5 metre high Red Lady to live opera singers performing from silver clouds above the auditorium.
